A checklist for settling an estate
When a loved one passes away one of the more difficult and stress inducing tasks is having to settle the financial estate. Not only are you going through the natural grieving process but knowing what to do is confusing, with every state having different rules and procedures.
If you are faced with this situation the first thing that I advise is to be patient. Don’t feel like you need to get everything done immediately and know that when dealing with a probate court things will move slowly. Also, if you have the financial means and / or the estate is significant, spend the money to hire a lawyer who specializes in estate law. The money you spend on hiring a competent professional often times is worth every penny.
